Construction Management is the planning, coordinating, and building of a project from conception to completion. Professor Ibrahim Odeh developed in Fall 2016 a Construction Management Specialization containing four courses which are listed below. After successfully finishing the courses, each registered learner earns a certificate of completion. With Professor Odeh's reputation for bridging theory and practice in the field, around 20 highly accomplished practitioners joined him in presenting practical topics and cases in these courses. This specialization is intended for Construction Industry professionals such as engineers, architects, project managers, contractors & subcontractors, and owners & owner's reps who are looking to advance their careers. There are also many active students at the undergraduate and graduate levels at other national and international institutions registered for these courses.

Construction Project Management introduces you to Project Initiation and Planning. Industry experts join Columbia University professor, Ibrahim Odeh, to give an overview of the construction industry. Professor Odeh teaches the fundamentals of the Project Development Cycle while guest lecturers discuss Lean Project Delivery method and Lean Design Behaviors. Technological advances, such as Building Information Modeling, will be introduced with real-world examples of the uses of BIM during the Lifecycle of the Project. The course concludes with Professor Odeh discussing the importance of project planning and scheduling and an opportunity to develop a Work Breakdown Structure.

Learners will discover the key project scheduling techniques and procedures including; how to create a network diagram, how to define the importance of the critical path in a project network, and defining project activities float. Also covered are the fundamentals of Bar Charts, Precedence Diagrams, Activity on Arrow, PERT, Range Estimating, and linear project operations and the line of balance.

This course introduces the types of cost estimation from the conceptual design phase through the more detailed design phase of a construction project. In addition, the course highlights the importance of controlling costs and how to monitor project cash flow. Students will work on a break-even analysis of construction tasks in a project.

The final course of the specialization expands the knowledge of a construction project manager to include an understanding of economics and the mathematics of money, an essential component of every construction project. Topics covered include the time value of money, the definition, and calculation of the types of interest rates, and the importance of Cash Flow Diagrams.
